What do you get when you climb up a set of old rickety stairs into a 120 year old former textile factory, decked out with old sewing machines and chairs hanging from the roof? A really cool restaurant, that’s what!
With its trendy decor and friendly staff, the Seamstress dining room has a casual and quirky vibe.
A modern Asian inspired menu features dishes like the beautiful crispy soft shell crab with green mango, jicama salad and nam jim.
The Cantonese style bbq chicken, served with maple bacon, lettuces and szechuan dressing is definitely a standout dish, rich with a rich smoky flavour.
The dessert menu at Seamstress is a lot of fun. We chose the 5-spiced doughnuts. The doughnuts were very much like churros and were served with yuzu curd, caramelized banana and candied popcorn. The fluffiness of the doughnuts in contrast with the soft banana and yuzu with the crunchiness of the popcorn was genius!
Seamstress also has a wonderful beer and wine list. We had a crisp bottle of Smallfry Barossa Riesling, which complimented the fresh flavours in the soft shell crab perfectly.
If you take a few more steps up above the dining room there’s also an award winning cocktail bar – next time I’m in Melbourne I’m definitely heading there for a night cap.
