Looking for a great place to have a drink and bite to eat this weekend?
Sitting within the old Rosella Soup Cannery in Rosebery is Archie Rose, a hidden gem, especially if you’re a gin, vodka or whisky drinker!
Archie Rose Distilling Co. is an independent Sydney microdistillery known for its handcrafted gin, vodka and whisky.
Just metres from the actual distillery, separated by a wall of aging whisky barrels is the Archie Rose bar.
The split level bar is full of copper cocktail shakers, talented and passionate bar staff that wave and greet you upon arrival and a range of premium spirits, cocktails, wines, beers, cheese and cured meats – all of the ingredients needed to celebrate the end of a week or start of a weekend.
If you wander through the complex throughout the day you will see the crew creating tanks of spirits and smell the distinguishing scents of whisky, gins and vodka’s in the making.
Throughout the afternoon and well into the evening the bar attracts a mix crowd of all ages but people who obviously share a love of top shelf, high quality sprits and well-crafted cocktails. Some sit as groups in the booths, others on high tables or on stools at the bar. The upstairs area, above the bar and overlooking the distillery is a great spot for an event.
If you are an espresso martini fan I recommend trying the Archie Rose “Espresso Martinique” ($20) – an espresso martini with a coconut twist, the cocktail is a beautiful mix of Archie Rose Original Vodka, with coconut and cold brew coffee. It’s served in a short tumbler over ice with coconut.
If you like a strong cocktail Mariel’s Mistress ($18) is the one for you! Served in a tall glass the Archie Rose Original Vodka is prominent and is infused with jasmine, Mancino Bianco, lemon and honey.
I love sour cocktails and the three citrus whisky sour is a winner! It’s made with Archie Rose White Rye, white grapefruit juice, lemon juice, blood orange juice and salted honey syrup. The classic whisky sour is given a modern interpretation at Archie Rose with the Aquafaba (chickpea brine) replacing the egg white.
Ordering at the Archie Rose bar is a lot of fun. From the team of chatty and passionate bar staff, to the classy copper shot pourers and cocktail shakers and beautifully presented selection of drinks there’s lots to admire.
Even a simple Gin and Tonic ($10) looks interesting here, with the P.S Soda Bush Tonic served in a glass jug on the side.
On discovering Archie Rose we had come from a big dinner next door at Three Blue Ducks but after browsing the selection of cured meats, charcuterie and cheese platters I will definitely be having a snack next time I visit!
The final say:
Standout drink – Archie Rose “Espresso Martinique” ($20)
Positives – Exceptional service and selection of premium cocktails and spirits
Negatives – Personally I found the Mariel’s Mistress ($18) cocktail too strong – perhaps a positive for some!!
