It’s 9pm on Friday night in Zetland and we are on the lookout for a close spot for dinner. There’s a couple of Asian restaurants, a ramen bar and a pub down the road but alas all have closed the kitchen!
Luckily there’s light at the end of Epsom Rd.
Sanpo Japanese is a small restaurant sitting on the corner of Epsom and Rothschild Avenue. The team are closing up too but are happy to let us take a seat.
The service is friendly with the waitress offering advice on the menu and enthusiastically liaising with the kitchen on some special requests including the chilli popcorn prawns without too much chilli – she takes our order with a smile.
The chilli popcorn prawns turn out to be more of sweet chilli popcorn prawns and they are delicious! The prawns are golden brown and lightly covered with the tasty sweet chilli marinade – a standout entrée that leaves you wanting more.
In true Japanese style we also order some wagyu.
The wagyu beef Tataki is lightly seared and is topped with fresh daikon and a punchy citrus vinegar dressing.
Sanpo’s home made pan fried pork gyoza are crispy and full of flavour.
Fried chicken is always a great way to celebrate the end of the week. The crispy Japanese fried karaage chicken is presented nicely on a charcoal plate and served with some lemon and a garlic aioli – it looks fantastic! But beware, the batter is quite thick on the chicken which makes this dish quite filling.
I highly recommend the homemade lemon iced tea with yuzu to help wash down any Friday special fried chicken dishes!
The final say:
Standout dish – chilli popcorn prawns
Positives – Friendly service and great selection of Japanese food
Negatives – The batter on the fried chicken was quite thick and very filling
